Clarify the brief
If the student cannot say what decision the work supports, the mentor’s first job is to shrink the question, not to add sources.
audience / GVI
GVI mentoring is feedback on research quality, analytical logic, communication, and next actions — not a series of inspirational calls with no draft on the table.
If the student cannot say what decision the work supports, the mentor’s first job is to shrink the question, not to add sources.
Ask whether the conclusion follows, whether a sensitivity would change it, and whether the stakeholder could act.
Comments that never appear in the next version were entertainment. The method assumes a visible change.
The brochure assigns an internship coach and two coaching calls, plus community touchpoints. That scarcity is a feature if mentors refuse to become unpaid co-authors. Students should arrive with a draft. Mentors should leave with a short list of changes. Written comments between calls keep the two live conversations from carrying the entire program.
You are not the student’s employer unless a separate agreement says so. You are a professional reviewer. That distinction protects both the referencing policy and the student’s ownership of the work.
Question quality. Source quality. Analytical logic, including whether the student did any sensitivity at all. Consumer or stakeholder trade-offs. Clarity of the recommendation. Realism of next steps. Professional communication in the deck and the spoken rehearsal. Time management as evidenced by drafts landing on time.
It is kinder to be specific. “Make it more professional” is not coaching. “Your slide 4 asserts a market size your sources do not support” is coaching.
If the draft is generic, un-sourced, or stylistically impossible given the student’s earlier writing, say so and require a process: source log, version history, a live walkthrough of the model. The standards page backs you. A certificate for ghostwritten work is a liability.
Five minutes: student restates the question and the current recommendation. Ten minutes: you pressure-test one weak joint. Five minutes: agree two revisions and the next file name. If the student wants career advice, park it until the file is honest. Career advice on top of a hollow deck teaches the wrong lesson.
Help the student translate the work into accurate resume language. If you are asked for a recommendation, write only what you reviewed. Decline if you cannot describe the contribution. That refusal is part of GVI’s quality system.
