The point is not a dashboard

The brochure title is “from data to insight.” Insight is a sentence that would surprise the student’s week-one self. Colorful charts that leave the recommendation untouched are decoration. Beginners should aim at a clean sheet with labeled assumptions, not at a software identity.

Excel as a thinking tool

Inputs separated from calculations. Units labeled. Sources next to copied figures. No hidden numbers in formulas if the student cannot explain them live. Financial modelling, at GVI level, means a structured set of assumptions that can be flexed — not a full investment-banker’s workbook.

Sensitivity analysis without theater

Change one important assumption at a time. Write what happens to the decision. If every sensitivity still “supports the recommendation,” the model is a slogan machine. Mentors should celebrate a student who changes their mind because the sheet demanded it.

For beginners

You do not need calculus. You need honesty about what the data can say. The beginners’ insight article is companion reading. If you have never used a spreadsheet, foundation plus a tiny data set is kinder than a fake three-statement model.

Data ethics

Use the cohort’s data set or public data. Do not scrape private accounts. Do not fabricate a survey. If AI suggests a number, it is not a source.

Handoff to consumer needs

Numbers without a customer are still incomplete. Module two should end with a question about who bears the trade-off the model just revealed.

The live walkthrough you should fear a little

A mentor will ask you to start at the inputs and talk to the insight sentence. If you cannot, the sheet is not yours yet — even if a template looks impressive. Beginners should build fewer rows they can narrate. That narration is professional communication applied to numbers, which is part of GVI’s skill list even though it is not a separate module.

Practice the walkthrough once with a teammate before the coaching call. Stumbling in practice is cheaper than stumbling in the scarce call.

What module two owes module three

A number that implies a person. If volume assumes a customer who will wait, module three must test that. If margin assumes a price a segment will not pay, say so. Analysis that cannot name a human is still incomplete, which is why the curriculum order is stubborn.
